no-cost ways to eliminate what has become
a
daily annoyance for many people.
Those persistent pop-ups can come in two forms:
These are the
annoying grey boxes that pop up on your screen
anytime your computer is connected to the
Internet. It is not "officially" spam
because it does not travel via email. The
boxes look something like this:

You can only receive these if you have WindowsXP, Windows2000 or Windows NT. (Those of you who are still using Windows95, Windows98 or Windows ME are spared from this problem.) The advertisers are exploiting the built-in Microsoft technology in these newer versions of Windows in order to put their messages "in your face" without you even having to open their email message!
You can, however, easily turn off your Windows' ability to view these messages and thus free yourself from this daily annoyance. Simply follow these steps:

In Windows 2000: (1) Select "Start" (2) Choose "Programs" (3) Choose "Administrative Tools" (4) Choose "Services" (5) Right-click "Messenger" (6) Select "Properties" (7) Click "Stop" To permanently disable Messenger: (8) Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK" |
